The Office of Research and Innovation (OR&I) is a Major Administrative Unit (MAU) with more than 500 employees who support MSUs
research and creative activity by administering research funding, ensuring research integrity for both faculty and students, providing grant
support services, fostering collaboration, licensing university inventions, and overseeing regulatory compliance.
The Administrative Business Manager serves as a senior leader of the Office of Research Regulatory Support (ORRS) unit. This role will work closely with the AVP of ORRS to communicate and implement the strategic priorities within the unit HR, finance, and administration teams. The Administrative Business Manager will support the growth of ORRS through strategic alignment of resources, ensuring proper training and development of internal staff. This position will lead the ORRS administration, finance, and HR teams through change management processes; ensuring that training gaps are identified and corrected, responsibilities are clear and aligned with the role and classification and ensure accountability consistently throughout the unit. In partnership with the OR&I leadership team, this individual will ensure alignment with the MAU practices and policies. Lastly, this role is responsible for leading the unit in the budgeting process and will oversee all budgets within ORRS.
Plans, directs and manages budget processes, personnel activities and other administrative functions including exercising responsibility for the management authorization of expenditures and personnel transactions of a College or major administrative department/unit.
Determines best practices and develops policies and procedures consistent with organizational values and goals, and recommends methods for integration of services with organizational initiatives.
Maintains advanced knowledge of key industry and organizational metrics and develops business cases for projects and initiatives.
Executes case and pilot studies to evaluate and address specific business issues or critical activities in terms of value added, impact and utility derived from cost-benefit analysis.
Maintains contemporary knowledge of ethics laws, standards, legislation, and emerging trends that may affect organizational behaviors and practice.
Maintains advanced knowledge in the use of data, statistics, evidence-based research, benchmarks, HR and business metrics to make critical decisions.
Fosters a culture of inclusiveness within the organization.
Serves as a member of senior management in order to participate in the development of goals, objectives, policies and procedures for the administrative department/unit.
Directs the preparation of University budget and fiscal reports.
Coaches, hires, evaluates, and directs the professional and support staff of the Unit.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a business-related field or in a field which corresponds to the particular department of employment; eight or more years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in office procedures and administration, or in performing responsibilities related to the operational activities of the employing unit; experience in a supervisory role; experience with word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation software and/or desktop publishing, web page software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
