The Network Technician is a technical role that provides support to all campus layer-1 and layer-2 network devices, field support with customer service to campus users, and troubleshoots network cabling, terminations, UPS systems, and network switches. The position advises users on appropriate actions for resolving technical issues. The Network Technician will provide an efficient response time for students, faculty, and staff requesting activation or troubleshooting of campus wiring, jacks, or network switches for all campus connections in support of faculty/staff buildings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Implementation & Support
Install, troubleshoot, and replace network cabling, jacks, UPS Systems; create, update, and share network documentation for Network Communications closets; provide skilled installation such as new equipment configuration and installation of software; and suggests improvements to standard procedures.
Monitoring & Troubleshooting
Configure, troubleshoot, and tweak minor network switch configuration and documentation; develop training on technical issues and processes; participate as required in meetings, special projects, prepares reports and documents as needed; all duties are to be performed to meet Industry, University, and departmental standards and policies; provide assistance with Wireless Access Point mounting, install, and documentation as needed; pull, terminate, troubleshoot, and fix network cabling issues; and perform routine provisioning and decommissioning of standard network equipment.
Administration and Documentation
Receive trouble communications, research, and diagnose the problem; assist with maintaining a clean, work environment; ensure work hours/time is logged and entered within payroll deadlines; attend Information Technology staff meetings; and other duties as assigned/needed.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Knowledge of Networking principles including, switching, routing, LAN, WAN, Wi-fi, and Firewalls
- Knowledge of Network hardware and cabling standards
- Knowledge of relevant building and fire codes
- Skills in coworker/customer, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, and questioning
- Skills in problem-solving and multi-tasking
- Skills in documentation
- Ability to research a wide range of networking issues as required
- Ability to absorb and retain information quickly
- Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language

Minimum Qualifications: Typically requires a high school diploma and two years of relevant networking experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate degree and 5 years of networking experience are preferred.
