The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.
We are seeking an experienced Business Manager to provide staff leadership for a range of administrative functions including finance, human resources, space allocation and facilities planning. The Business Manager will coordinate a small team of professional staff, providing strategic direction and day-to-day mentorship, and will work with the Director and other staff to develop Institute policies, procedures and guidelines to support administration of programs and functions.
Core responsibilities include:
- Coordinate the preparation of proposals and administration of grants and contracts for academic units.
- Ensures compliance with government regulations, agency requirements and internal policies and procedures
- Develops budgets and forecasts for the institute, and provides oversight and ongoing monitoring or adjustments of budgets and associates expenses.
- Provides business analysis and reporting for projects and initiatives
- Lead a team of 4-6 business office staff, and provide oversight of assigned administration/operation functions within the Institute and support university wide programs as they impact units.
- Establish staffing levels for office - recruit, select talent and train employees.
- Provide day to day direction and mentorship and assign tasks.

You should demonstrate:
- An understanding of budgets and financial reporting.
- An understanding of finance, business management and/or accounting.
- An ability to lead a team of office professionals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
- 5-8 years of experience in a business management, business operations, business administration, accounting, finance and/or grant management role.
- Experience handling budgets and financial reporting
- Experience with business analysis
- Experience leading and managing teams is preferred
- Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification is helpful
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
