2023 - 2024: Director of Health Center, Full Time, 12 months, Exempt
Summary: The Director of the Health Center serves as a school nurse and as the lead administrator for the Health Center at SSFS, both during the school year and for the Summer Camp. In addition to school nursing functions, the Director oversees proper and efficient operation of the Health Center, assures program compliance with legal requirements and best practices, supervises an additional School Nurse, and acts as a Delegating Nurse for the campus Certified Medication Technicians. The director leads communications between the Health Center and the faculty, administration, students, parents, and relevant agencies (such as the county Health Department). The Director of Health Center is a key member of the Student Support Team.
The Director of the Health Center is responsible for the health of our residential students. As such, the role includes being on call in the evenings should a health emergency arise in our dormitory. The Director of the Health Center is also responsible for ensuring the safe dispensation of medication to our residential students in the mornings and evenings.
This position is a full-time, 12 month, administrative position reporting directly to the Assistant Head of School.
Essential Job Functions?:
Functions in accordance with the Maryland Board of Nursing, and Sandy Spring Friends School policies and procedures.
In collaboration with the SSFS Student Support Services Department, assists with care given to students in compliance with SSFS School policies, professional standards of practice, and the Student’s Individual Health Plan.
Provides general first aid, emergency care, and administration of medication for students.
Delivers health services for students in a timely manner; offers assessment and medical referral; educates the community on important health issues; identifies health problems.
Collaborates with parents, primary care physicians, and other health care providers
In collaboration with Student Support Services Department, promotes health and wellness as well as the prevention of illness and injuries for students and community
Manages the School’s Magnus online health system and maintains student records ensuring up-to-date medical records to maintain compliance with Maryland Department of Health mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions.
Acts as the liaison between the Athletic Trainer and the Health Center to ensure concussion protocol and proper medical follow-up is adhered to in order to achieve the athlete’s safe return to learn and to play.
Engages in communication with parents, student support personnel, and local care providers regarding student health and wellness.
Supports Sandy Spring Friends School’s Campus Safety Committee and Crisis Team in the event of medical emergencies
Manages the Health Center budget and credits cards, maintains adequate supplies and inventory, and keeps Health Center facilities in good order
Provides supervision, scheduling, and oversight of the nursing staff
Develops, implements, and updates Health Center policies and procedures; adjust protocols as requirements and needs change
Manages CPR and AED programs and supplies
Manages Epipen program and supplies

Qualifications and Requirements:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland
Hold a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, or a closely related degree
Knowledgeable of, and have experience with, school nursing and health center operations.
Able to work independently, remain organized, follow up & follow through with assigned tasks
Computer literacy skills including but not limited to: Excel, PowerPoint, MS Word, accessing web-based resources, electronic health records system(s)
Able to write effective communications internally (faculty & staff) and externally (students and families)
Able to manage multiple demands including frequent questions and phone calls from staff, parents, students, and other community members
This position represents SSFS and is a visible role within the internal and external communities. Professional decorum and customer-relations skills are required for this position.

Please note that the School has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, which requires that all employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination, including documentation of a booster shot given five months or more since you completed the final dose in the primary series.
Physical Requirements?: Daily desk work includes significant amounts of telephone and computer time as well as mobility around the entire campus. This includes frequent walking inside and outside, managing stairs as a part of daily routines, as well as responding to injury/illness incidents; occasional night-time responsibilities, including consultations, acute care visits to the dorm, or evening adult presence for students staying overnight in the infirmary as needed. The Health Center Director, together with the other school nurse, share the daily on-call duties for the Residential Program and are required to be available for emergency phone calls to provide medical advice.
