The Buckley School, an all-boys K-9 school located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is seeking an outstanding Spanish teacher in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Buckley students begin Spanish studies in first grade and continue through ninth grade, offering excellent preparation for language study in secondary school and beyond.
By fourth grade, instruction is primarily in Spanish, with a balanced focus on learning to speak, read, write, and understand the language while building knowledge and appreciation of the Spanish language and Hispanic and Latinx culture.
The Spanish and French programs are part of the school’s outstanding World Language department, which strives for all students to attain communicative proficiency upon graduation.
The successful candidate will recognize the unique opportunities afforded by an all-boys educational context, in addition to having a demonstrated passion for this content, this age range, and the art and science of teaching and learning.
They will collaborate closely with colleagues within and across grade levels; collegiality and adaptability are essential qualities.
Buckley’s teachers are vibrant, diverse, and dedicated to their students. They take part in the whole life of the school and take joy in fostering the development of young boys. Hosting student clubs, serving as advisors, and having family-style lunch with students are all hallmarks of the program and part of the faculty experience.
The ideal candidate will have at least 3-5 years of Spanish teaching experience and a passion for language education.
They should have an in-depth knowledge of the Spanish language and best practices for effective instructional approaches.
The ability to foster a love of learning the Spanish language in a joyful and rigorous classroom is paramount.
Excellent writing, academic technology, and communication skills are vital.
An undergraduate degree in Spanish or a related discipline, and a master’s degree in Spanish, the teaching of Spanish, or a related field, are preferred, though candidates with relevant experience and who don’t match that degree profile will be considered.
