Position Summary: Westmark School seeks a Communications Specialist for a five-month temporary, in-person assignment from January 15 through June 9, 2023. The hourly rate is $35–$42, dependent on experience.
Reporting to the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications, the Communications Specialist writes, edits, fact-checks, proofreads, publishes, and manages a variety of e-communications, web content, print pieces, and video projects. Across all assignments, the Specialist collaborates successfully with faculty and staff and ensures that messaging is clear, consistent, compelling, and relevant. The Specialist also provides general support with regards to advertising and press relations.
Key Responsibilities:
E-Communications:
Manages a busy schedule of e-communications, including This Week at Westmark, to keep the community informed of School initiatives and priorities, drive attendance to events, and support admission and fundraising efforts.
Writes and edits e-communications, circulates them for approval, pulls constituent e-lists, and schedules on-time delivery.
Print and Digital Collateral:
Writes and edits content for print and digital collateral, such as invitations, diplomas and award certificates, event programs, e-mail headers, and signage.
Tracks editorial, design, production, printing, and/or mailing schedules. Interacts with freelance writers, designers, printers, and fulfillment houses.
Supports major institutional publications and press materials.
Website:
Builds and updates web pages, including associated forms.
Completes writing/editing assignments related to the website redesign project on time and in alignment with project goals and style guide.
Social Media:
Proposes and sources Instagram and Facebook content.
Takes photos for and writes/edits social media posts.
Videography and Photography:
Assists in videography and photography shoots.
Collaborates with videographers/editors on videos for the Spring Gala.
Helps to organize and maintain digital assets.
Qualifications:
BA degree and 5+ years of experience as an account executive, writer/editor, or communications professional position.
Exceptional skills, track record, and interest in performing editorial functions, including copywriting, copyediting, fact-checking, giving and receiving editorial feedback, and proofreading, preferably in a K–12 school marketing and communications setting.
Strong familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style standards. Superb attention to grammar, spelling, diction, word usage, typographic treatment, punctuation, and style guidelines.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Adobe Acrobat. Basic knowledge of HTML, Photoshop, Canva, and InDesign a plus.
Experience using website content management systems and email platforms; experience with Finalsite a plus.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including attending the Spring Gala on Saturday, March 11, 6:00–10:00 pm, and occasional evenings and weekends.
COVID-19: Westmark School follows Centers for Disease Control and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health regulations for K–12 schools. All faculty and staff are required to be vaccinated, including any booster shots.
