Job Title: Director of Human Resources
FLSA Status: Full-Time Staff, Exempt, 12 months per year
Supervisor’s Title: Chief Financial and Operating Officer with a close working relationship with the Head of School and Faculty Liaison
Direct Reports: HR Administrative Assistant & Receptionist, HR Coordinator (shared with CFOO), and Payroll Manager (shared with Controller).
Position Summary:
The Director of Human Resources ensures that The Hill is a “destination place of employment” and fosters a positive and collegial employee culture. In support of this goal, the Director is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the School’s Human Resources function, for designing and implementing HR policies and programs for all employees, and developing strategies to retain, recruit, and engage top talent to enable The Hill School to pursue its mission. Major areas of responsibility include recruitment, compensation and benefits, organizational development, employee relations, compliance, policy, employment law, culture and climate surveys, and other duties as assigned by the CFOO and the Head of School. The Director also will collaborate closely with the Faculty Liaison, New Faculty Co-Coordinators, and the Dean of Spiritual Life and Equity to provide guidance and leadership in these areas.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and empathy in developing a diverse workplace.
- Conduct regular employee culture and climate surveys.
- Develop strategies and oversee the administration of the School’s compensation and benefits plans including wellness and retirement programs.
- Participate in the School’s overall annual HR planning process to prioritize and budget human capital needs and monitor budget compliance throughout the fiscal year.
- Direct and oversee all recruitment efforts for staff and manage the consistency of recruitment for school-wide organization.
- In collaboration with The Hill’s immigration attorney, work to petition for visas for potential new and current employees.
- Support the recruitment and onboarding of faculty and administrators, in collaboration with the Head of School, New Faculty Co-Coordinators, and other campus leaders.
- Collaborate with the New Faculty Co-Coordinators to develop and maintain The Hill’s employee onboarding program and help to facilitate a sense of belonging for new employees.
- Serve on the Faculty Campus Housing, Employee Relations, and Professional Development Committees.
- Direct and oversee all employee relations matters, including all employee-related legal matters, in collaboration with The Hill’s retained legal counsel and Legal Committee members.
- Manage the Vector Solutions training compliance program.
- Implement and manage recognition programs to reward longevity and strong performance, including the PIN program, annual staff luncheon, and other efforts to recognize employee contributions.
- Regularly update the Employee Handbook, position descriptions, policies, and communicate expectations in partnership with campus leaders.
- Manage the payroll and timekeeping process across campus, including compliance matters related to the FLSA and DOL
- Serve as the School’s Benefits Administrator and serve as primary School contact with the PAISBOA HBT, brokers and benefit vendors.
- Serve as a co-fiduciary as an Administrator for The Hill School Retirement Plan.
- Administer the 457 b and 457 f plans for the Head of School compensation program.
- Ensure the ACA and EEO reporting are accurate and timely.
- Manage worker’s and unemployment compensation programs; serve or designate a representative to the safety committee.
- Effectively manage faculty and staff performance concerns, including performance improvement, development plans, reductions in force, and releases to minimize conflict and legal risk.
- Lead continued strategic development & growth of HRIS/payroll system, and other HR related systems such as but not limited to FSA/COBRA, background, and applicant tracking.

The Director of Human Resources will possess a collaborative leadership style and the ability to manage effectively across a complex organization. They will be tactful, approachable, organized, honest, able to maintain confidentiality, savvy at dealing with many different personalities, and a very good listener. The Director will publicly support the mission and vision of The Hill School in a professional manner and be eager to work as a dynamic team member.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a related field, Master's degree strongly preferred; 7-10 years of progressively responsible generalist experience with preference for experience in an educational setting; supervisory experience; both strong hands-on and strategic abilities; a demonstrated ability to form and maintain positive relationships with a broad range of individuals; excellent interpersonal and presentation skills; the ability to facilitate best practices and policies; the ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously; outstanding written and oral communications skills; and the ability to work accurately and effectively with financial data and computerized systems.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: SHRM-SCP and/or SPHR
Other Skills and Abilities: Must guarantee absolute confidentiality, security, and integrity of employee records and sensitive information. Physical demands include reading, writing, visual acuity, and mobile ability across campus. The position requires sitting, standing, and walking.
