OVERVIEW The Director of Middle School embodies Westmark’s philosophy for educating and empowering students with diverse learning differences and meeting their associated social-emotional needs. Reporting to Claudia Koochek—our visionary Head of School and an esteemed leader in the LD community—the Director of Middle School provides leadership and encouragement for our students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 and their talented and dedicated faculty. The position works in close collaboration with the Directors of Lower School and Upper School; the Director of Athletics, PE, and Wellness; the Director of Curriculum; and Reading/Math Academic Coaches to deliver an appropriate and effective academic program for our students. The Director of Middle Schoolworks with colleagues to ensure that the School is fulfilling our mission, philosophy, and diversity statements and goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Serves as a key member of the Senior Administration team by owning responsibility and taking accountability for the educational leadership of the Middle School program and daily operations. - Directs the activities of the instructional team, ensuring guidance for students while fully integrating parents in the learning and feedback process. - Seeks and develops opportunities to get to know students and their families. - Builds and maintains an appropriate academic and enrichment program for students who learn differently. - Assists in the Admission process for testing, interviewing, and evaluating candidates for enrollment. - Works with the Curriculum Team and the Director of Student Enrichment and Innovation to provide an enhanced experiential program of learning using various different modes. - Recruits, trains, and works to retain educators with the expertise, positive energy, and focus to serve and support students and their families. - Fosters parent engagement and education and creates ongoing opportunities to communicate with parents, such as back to school nights, orientations, Open Houses, parent chats, parent education, and Westmark Parent Association (WPA) meetings. - Facilitates learning by modeling and promoting a school environment that is inclusive, respectful, compassionate, healthy, and communicative. Actively listens to all voices. - Develops and manages the Middle School budget in collaboration with the Business Office. - Participates in professional development and relevant research to remain current and knowledgeable about dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, comorbidities, and associated social emotional conditions. - Takes part in the life of the School with excitement for our students’ accomplishments in all areas. Inspires students to do their very best and to pursue their goals. - Works with Advancement to further fundraising and cultivation efforts by attending events and participating in development strategies.
Our Middle School has a well-established foundation and offers the next leader an exciting opportunity to build upon its strengths. The Director of Middle School will work with our Directors of Lower School and Upper School and other colleagues as part of a whole-community approach to teaming and cross divisional collaboration.
The Director of Middle School is a key member of the Administration, responsible for strategic planning of school initiatives, including: continuing to grow our enrollment in anticipation of a new, state-of-the-art Lower School; developing high-level teaching and learning specialty courses for LD professionals to grow their expertise; and ensuring that Westmark faculty stay abreast of current practices for engaging LD students.
Everyone at the school is actively involved in learning, understanding, and modeling appropriate actions in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion in every facet of our program. The Director of Middle School is charged with continuing this work on a day-to-day basis.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS - Master’s degree or higher and 5+ years of progressive experience as an inclusive leader and manager for Grades 6–8. - Strong curricular experience focused on ensuring research-based, high-quality teaching and learning, preferably with a track record of serving students with language-based learning differences. - Mission-driven, with a strong career commitment to the independent school movement and the education process. - Active listening and excellent written, oral, and presentation communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with all stakeholders at the School. - Ability to create a dynamic and inclusive culture for students and their faculty.
