This is a full-time, exempt position within the Middle School reporting to the Head of Middle School.

The Shipley School, founded in 1894, is a co-educational, college preparatory, independent day school currently enrolling 835 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, the school is committed to educational excellence and dedicated to developing in each student a love of learning and a compassionate participation in the world. The Middle School has 195 students in grades 6-8, and a faculty of 30.

The Shipley School seeks a qualified candidate to be the Assistant Head of Middle School. This position will commence in July 2021 and is a 12-month position.

Major Responsibilities:

• Work with the leadership team and teachers on matters related to student conduct, mentoring, discipline, and growth

• Work with the leadership team to attract, recruit, and retain excellent faculty by participating in the hiring, mentoring, supervision, and evaluation of colleagues.

• Assist with the day-to-day running of the division, including organizing events and reviewing, editing, and approving communications to students and families.

• Assisting in the shared leadership of the division by attending and leading meetings and learning opportunities with colleagues, families, and students.

• (leadership of MS & brain thrust of MS) (Act in conjunction with the other members of the Middle School administrative team to counsel and support each other while dealing with the division's critical decisions, complexities, and struggles.)

• Teach a course(s) in MS (to be determined by HoMS)

Qualifications:

• The successful candidate must...

  • Have excellent speaking and writing skills and an ability to communicate with students, families, and colleagues

  • 5+ years teaching experience

  • An appreciation for the unique qualities of the typical young adolescents found in a middle school setting
