Sandy Spring Friends School seeks a full-time Director of Institutional Equity, Justice, and Belonging (EJB) starting July 2021. There may be a possibility for a start date as early as February 2021 if the candidate desires.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of EJB is a member of the senior administrative team and will lead the design, implementation, and oversight of the School’s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and programs. The DEJB serves as the school wide resource for topics or concerns related to diversity, equity, justice, inclusion, and cross-cultural competency.
In conjunction with the Head of School, leads the school’s strategic, operational, and programmatic initiatives related to diversity, equity, justice, and belonging.
Partner with Division Heads, Department Heads and teachers to develop and support an inclusive curriculum that highlights the content, concepts and skills that students need related to diversity, justice, and cross-cultural competency, founded in a knowledge of child development and identity development for students in PS - 12th grade
Partner with Director of Human Resources and the Admissions Office to aid in the recruitment and retention of a broadly diverse faculty, staff, student, and parent body
Partner with the All School Diversity Committee to design and implement professional development and support programs for faculty and staff, including affinity groups
Partner with the Parent Association, especially Intersect, to design and implement parent education and support programs
Provide training for student leaders in cross-cultural competency and work with student leaders, including Spark, Flame, and Torch to develop and implement support programs and educational opportunities for students in all divisions, including affinity groups
Works with the Diversity, Community, and Spiritual Life Committee of the Board of Trustees to aid in the progress of their annual goals
Connect with alumni from various backgrounds and support their connection and engagement in the school’s diversity efforts
Works with the Administrative Council to ensure the school’s policies, practices, and procedures align with our efforts to be inclusive, anti-biased, and non-discriminatory
Works with the Dean of Boarding to provide training and resources for boarding students and boarding faculty, with a focus on the experience of international students and students from marginalized and underrepresented identities living on campus
Works closely with the Director of Human Resources and the leadership team to improve effectiveness and success in recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff.
In partnership with the Audit Oversight Committee, establishes strategic objectives and implements communication systems that will assess progress and effectiveness based on the recommendations and action items from the recent diversity audit as well as identifying the need and format of potential future audits
Partners with the Director of Communications and the Director of Marketing to aid the development and implementation of a marketing and branding strategy that aligns with the school’s diversity efforts and ensures that the messaging from the school is inclusive and anti-biased.
Creates, supports, and networks with the various diversity, equity, and inclusion related groups within the School's internal and external communities, including locally, regionally, and nationally.
Remains current on best practices by attending professional development opportunities, conferences and professional meetings.
Possibly teach one section in an academic area depending on background, experience, and school needs.
Success Factors: Highly collaborative leader with demonstrated ability to lead and inspire people from a multitude of backgrounds and perspectives; ability to organize, manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent problem solving skills, creativity, judgement, initiative, and the ability to see things from a solutions-oriented perspective; skilled in conflict management, change management, and cross-cultural communication; and knowledge of independent schools. An understanding of Quakerism is desirable but not required.
Qualifications: Master’s Degree or equivalent work in relevant field; demonstrated success in diversity leadership working collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, students, families, trustees; at least 2 years leading institutional efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion; at least 2 years of teaching or other education-related experience desirable but not required; cross-cultural competence; experience leading teams and facilitating workshops on diversity, equity, inclusion and cultural competency.
