Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for the daily accounting functions within the Business Office. The Controller is a hands-on position that will manage various aspects of the business office including: the monthly and annual close, annual audit, student billing and collections, purchasing, accounts payable and projects assigned by the CFO.
The Controller will partner with the CFO to provide the Board of Trustees and the Head of School with the necessary accounting and business office support to enable the delivery of education consistent with the highest standards of excellence, while supporting the CFO in further developing the processes, procedures and systems utilized in the business office.

Responsible for managing all areas of the accounting function, including developing and overseeing appropriate policies and procedures while ensuring strong internal controls.
Supervises three accounting staff, providing strong mentoring and support.
Leads the annual financial audit and annual IRS Form 990 filing.
Oversees the monthly and annual close including all journal entries and reconciliations, while appropriately accounting for all temporary and permanently restricted funds.
Monthly reconciles all fundraising revenues in accounting system with Advancement office report.
Directly manages student tuition accounts and payment collection, including collaborating with Admission Department to properly track and setup student accounts for all enrollments, generating annual tuition billings, tracking multiple payment plan options, drafting monthly payment plans via ACH system, and ensuring all tuition payments are received from parents timely within due dates.
Oversees accounts payable and reviews vendor contracts.
Oversees all travel, purchasing and receiving for the school.
Manages cash flow, bank accounts, investment portfolio, and banking relationships.
Cross trains on all accounting functions, providing backup and support as needed.
Tracks financial performance for auxiliary programs, providing support with registrations process.
Provides GL accounts and budget variance analysis as needed.
Assists CFO with financial aid (FA) program by answering parent questions regarding the program and eligibility, compiling FA applications, tracking all awards against budget, and communicating awards to families timely.
Maintains all office files, adhering to the school’s files retention policy.
Ad hoc projects as assigned.
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration. CPA preferred.
3+ years of experience in a Controller level role.
Strong background in non-profit accounting, and proven excellence in managing all aspects of accounting operations.
Proven record of mentoring and developing staff.
Strong proficiency in technology, computer systems and programs including Excel, Word, and Accounting software. Blackbaud a plus.
Adept at improving current operations through identifying inefficiencies and by leveraging available technology.
Outstanding communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with all constituents, including employees, parents, and vendors.
Exemplary ethical standards and confidentiality.
Prior experience with private schools or non-profits a plus.
