The School Nurse will treat students for medical issues, help prevent physical issues and disease, and coordinate routine health assessments and health screenings to mitigate health and safety risks. This position is responsible for helping to develop and implement health and safety policies and procedures in support of the school’s mission and in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
Responsible for professional, medical treatment of students.
Provides major or minor first aid to students.
Responsible for early detection of physical problems and health evaluations
Evaluates students or employees with contagious or infectious diseases.
Responsible for disease prevention and risk mitigation.
Assists in promoting programs on health-education and immunization.
Maintains clinical records.
Documents student and employee illness and accidents.
Completes required state reports.
Enforces the school’s protocol for blood-borne pathogens.
Cares for chronic or acute illness, as well as injuries, in the school setting.
Supervises and implement the school medication policy, administering medication of various sorts including insulin (via pump), inhalers and oral medication in accordance with RN licensure.
Coordinates vision, hearing, and orthopedic screening and health assessments.
Provides emergency aid to students and school staff.
Assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Registered nurse (RN) certification required.
Current California nursing license required.
School Nurse Certificate and Public Health Certificate are desirable.
2-5 years of medical experience, preferably working in a school environment.
Current CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task effectively.
Proficient computer expertise in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google docs
Knowledge of community agencies to help students and their families.
Ability to maintain confidentially of student and employee health information.
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and bending.
