Saint Xavier High School’s Guidance Department is an integral part of the educational process. The dedicated professionals in the department work as student advocates by providing a number of services for students and their parents. Working closely with the administration and faculty, counselors promote the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social development of the young men attending Saint Xavier. The services provided by the Guidance Department are:
As part of a college preparatory institution, Saint Xavier’s counselors support students in achieving academic success and developing necessary skills for college. Personal issues are handled professionally, following the rules of confidentiality. Through personal and academic advising, the counselors aid students as they explore solutions using their own talents. Learning these techniques is beneficial for future-decision making after students leave Saint Xavier.
Saint Xavier counselors meet each student individually and provide grade-level appropriate classroom guidance curriculum. Two counselors are assigned to each freshman class and continue with those students until the end of senior year. At that time, students are also assigned a senior college counselor who specializes in the college advising and application process. College counselors consult with the students’ past counselors to provide the best service to the students.
Areas of Responsibility:
To meet student need, Saint Xavier Guidance department will:
Make personal counseling available to all interested students.
Provide academic counseling throughout the student’s high school years.
Provide students with college advising.
Assist in exploring careers, beginning with freshmen, making career and vocational information available through Naviance/Family Connection.
Provide web resources to assist student needs.
Continually develop and implement programs of strategic interest to students.
Assist freshmen in transitioning to Saint Xavier.
Communicate with faculty on behalf of students regarding counseling, referrals, test results, and learning differences.
Advocate for students while promoting intellectual, emotional and social development.
In order to assist parents, Saint Xavier’s Guidance Department will:
Offer parents information nights/sessions for each class year.
Offer the expertise of the staff when and where needed.
Help interpret test scores that will assist parents in planning the student’s future academic course.
Provide progress reports for parents upon request.
Set up National Honor Society tutors upon request
Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred.
Experience in school counseling preferred.
Secondary teaching experience and certification preferred.
