Position Description: The School Counselor provides support services to students, staff, and parents, which include counseling, referrals, assessments, diagnostics, and report writing. The School Counselor implements the school counseling program, aligning communications and activities with American School Counselors’ Association’s (ASCA) model and the School’s mission and philosophy. The School Counselor advocates on the behalf of students and parents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Build and maintain professional, positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and other community members.
Maintain knowledge of current research, trends, and best practices related to school counseling.
Share expertise with faculty and staff, providing in-service and offering information to colleagues.
Be familiar and ensure compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act and Independent Schools.
Be familiar and ensure compliance with FERPA and HIPPA statutes as these apply to students’ rights to privacy and school communications and reports.
Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program, gr. toddler -5th
Provide responsive services including individual and small-group counseling; individual/family/school crisis intervention; peer facilitation, consultation and collaboration; and referrals to outside agencies, as needed.
Provide classroom guidance including academic skills support; organizational, study and test-taking skills; education in understanding self and others; coping strategies; peer relationships and effective social skills; communication, problem solving, decision-making, conflict resolution and study skills; substance abuse education; puberty education; and, diversity awareness.
Provide individual student planning including goal setting; problem solving; education in understanding self and others; and transition plans.
Provide assistance and support to parents with academic planning; school-to-parent communications; one-on-one parent conferencing; group parent meetings -coffee with the counselor and, the referral process.
Provide assistance and support to teachers with social skills lessons, character counts program, learning styles assessment, and at risk student identification.
Provide counsel to school administrators on matters of school climate, academic support and interventions, behavioral management plans, student discipline, needs assessments, and student assistance team development.
Participate on the Student Support Team (SST) as a leader in the school to promote each student’s success
Collaborate to provide interventions, screenings, counseling, evaluation referrals, and the development and regular review of educational plans.
Assist with the coordination of formal assessments associated with psycho-educational evaluations.
Organize information, plan meetings, and prepare reports, as assigned.
Conserve accurate, complete, and confidential student records.
Ensure the safety of all students and manage medical emergencies, if necessary.
Liaise with teachers, psychologists, counselors, social workers, school nurse, educational therapists, and other professionals
Refer students to the school nurse, outside doctors or counselors,
Participate meaningfully in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and program. planning and evaluation
Be familiar with and adhere to the School’s Student Handbook and Employee Handbook..
Promote the School, its mission, its philosophy, and its programs.
Perform other duties, including classroom teaching, as assigned by the Division Head.
Masters’ degree in the field of social services with certification in school counseling; and prefer counseling and/or teaching experience
Knowledge of and ability to apply the ethical standards and principles of the school counseling profession and adherence to the legal aspects of the role of the school counselor including those statutes outlined in ADA, HIPPA, and FERPA
Ability to foster positive relationships based on mutual respect and trust
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with multiple constituencies
Excellent presentation skills
Detail-oriented team player with the ability to remain positive and willing to take initiative
The School Counselor is a 10.5 month, full-time plus faculty position with salary and benefits commensurate with education level, certifications, and counseling/teaching experience.
Performance review conducted annually by the Division Head.
