Under supervision and guidance of the Chief Accounting Officer and Chief Financial Officer, the Accountant manages much of the day-to-day accounting processes of the school. This includes managing payroll, accounts receivable, student accounts, processing bank transfers, making a variety of monthly accrual entries, and performing account reconciliations. The Accountant also produces reports for departmental budget managers, senior administration, and the board of trustees, and assists in the interpretation of those reports. As part of a small team within a close and cooperative school community, the Accountant also has a variety of additional responsibilities, which includes assisting in bookstore management.
Prepares and manages payroll, including time keeping system.
Evaluates all major benefit program invoices for payment.
Calculate payment for school drivers to be included in payroll.
Assists auditors as needed to perform annual audit.
Provides support to departmental budget managers.
Manages and accounts for petty cash.
Reconciles student bank transactions.
Reconciles checking accounts.
Makes monthly accrual entries.
Prepares audit documentation and serves as audit contact for payroll, benefits, cash accounts.
Assists with various other aspects of audit.
Compiles and enters survey data for NAIS, VAIS, NBOA and insurance agent.
Other duties as may be assigned by Chief Financial Officer and/or Chief Accounting Officer.
Position requires education and experience in financial accounting, including at least BA degree in accounting.
Experience with non-profit fund accounting strongly preferred.
High level proficiency with accounting software, Excel, and other Microsoft Office applications and Google Suite applications.
Effective communications, both written and spoken.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective record keeping.
Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed without close supervision.
Ability to calmly handle challenges and problem solve effectively.
Must be personable and able to relate well to people.
A cheerful, can-do attitude is a must.
SUPERVISOR AND DIRECT REPORTS
The Accountant reports to the Chief Accounting Officer and Chief Financial Officer.
Must be willing to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as requested. This staff position is full time (12 month/37.5 hours per week) and benefits eligible. Normal hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
