Job Description The University of Nevada, Reno, College of Science, Biology Department seeks applications for a Business Manager. The Business Manager is responsible for administering the complex financial, administrative and human resources operations of the largest academic and research department within the College of Science in collaboration with and on behalf of the Chair. The position maintains significant discretion and authority regarding how to administer the operation efficiently and effectively in consideration of short and long range goals and directly contributes to the strategic planning of the department.
The Business Manager is responsible for full range of fiscal operations to include budgeting and fiscal management for various accounts including State, extramural, self-supporting, and foundation funds. Responsibilities include preparing financial, analytical and forecasting reports; developing budgets; developing course fees and course buy-outs; and overseeing post-award activities. The Business Manager regularly assesses financial performance to identify and analyze problems and recommend solutions. The incumbent provides financial consultation, guidance, and training to faculty and staff to ensure compliance.
The Business Manager is administers the human resources operation for the Biology department. The position collaborates with the Chair to ensure adequate staffing for academic, research and business services. Responsibilities include preparing reports; overseeing the employment process through hiring and terminations; managing, mentoring, and coaching staff, and providing human resources consultation to supervisors. The incumbent will provide first line employee relations support in response to conflicts or performance deficiencies.
Additionally, the Business Manager collaborates with the Chair and Associate Chairs in preparing program reviews, accreditation, certification requirements, space management, strategic planning and grant projects.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years OR Master’s Degree and one (1) year of related work experience. Related Experience: budgeting, accounting, and human resources experience; experience managing high-level business operations; supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications Budgeting and accounting experience in a government or higher education setting. Experience in a higher education academic setting. Degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
