Gould Academy, an independent boarding school of 210 boys and girls, grades 9-PG, in Bethel, Maine, seeks a Controller. This position reports to the Assistant Head of School for Finances - Chief Financial Officer. The Controller is an integral part of the Business Office responsible for coordinating and assisting in the preparation of financial reports, analysis of historical and future income and expenses, and other special reports. The Controller oversees the functions of accounting, auditing and budgeting. There is a supervisory role within the Business Office of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for managing the accounting department, ensuring accurate and timely financial information
Preparing monthly financial statements, including variance analysis
Supervising Business Office staff to improve quality of work through training, direction, and motivation for skills development.
Complete and review accounting reconciliations on a monthly basis
Providing support in the hiring and training of accounting department staff
Administering, developing and maintaining payroll systems, internal controls, records, and the day-to-day payroll processing operations and related accounting entries.
Ensuring timely and accurate payment of debt service
Assisting the CFO in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts working with other administrators and department heads concerning budget performance
Communicating effectively and collaboratively the accounting policies and procedures with all members of the community and ensure compliance with such practices
Oversee the internal controls of the school as it relates to policies, procedures, and documentation of all accounting and financial reporting activities; exercise prudent financial judgement.
Cash management to include maintaining daily balances, supervising incoming cash receipts/deposits, and weekly cash reports to CFO
Lead position on preparation of schedules and work papers for annual accounting and 403(b) audits, and Form 990.
Prepare all periodic surveys and reports for the school’s trade organizations (e.g.NAIS, NBOA and ISANNE)
Support point of sale software in campus and online store
Perform in a responsible manner consistent with the overall mission of Gould
Other miscellaneous tasks as assigned by CFO
Bachelor’s degree Accounting
Minimum of 5 years experience in non-profit or government accounting, including managerial accounting
A solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Services Board (FASB)
Ability to learn and teach others established processes
Manage many tasks and projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines
Effective analytical, strategic, communication (oral and written), organizational and problem solving skills
Excellent client service skills
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Proficiency with MsWord, MsExcel, and Gmail, Google Docs, as well as payroll and accounting application software such as Senior Systems.
Creative ability, a positive outlook, an excellent work ethic and a sense of humor
