We are accepting applicants for a full-time Controller, working in the school's finance office. Reporting to the Finance & Operations Director, the Controller is responsible for providing oversight of all finance, accounting and the related reporting and compliance activities. The Controller oversees the day-to-day financial operations for the school including accounting and general ledger, accounts payable, student billing, and related work.
Some of the job responsibilities include:
Develop, implement and maintain procedures and policies to ensure an efficient and effective accounting operation. Manage compliance with existing and evolving IRS regulations as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Manage and develop accounting staff - clarify roles and responsibilities; leverage strengths of the team to meet the needs of the office
Prepare quarterly and fiscal year-end financial statements
Oversee the audit process, working closely with the school’s auditing firm, and manage the process of completing required annual filings, for example the Form 990
Assist in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts. Generate monthly budget reports and communicate with key budget managers, ensuring variances are properly investigated.
Work with Advancement and Programs departments to ensure accurate, consistent and timely reporting of revenues and expenses.
Analyze and reconcile investment accounts on a quarterly basis and ensure all investment income, realized and unrealized gains and losses are accounted for properly.
Provide administrative support for the Financial Aid program
Special projects as assigned by the Finance and Operations Director
Bachelor’s Degree required; CPA or MBA preferred
Substantial experience in a controller or similar accounting position; independent school or non-profit experience a plus
Managerial/supervisor experience required
Strong analytical & computation skills and high proficiency with technology including Excel, Word and other accounting and educational software programs.
Ability to communicate, solve problems, and work effectively in a service-oriented manner with all members of the school community.
Strong written and oral communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
Ability to take initiative in all work projects whether independent or with others
