Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy (SBSTA) seeks a Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) to immediately join its Leadership Team and oversee all strategic and tactical aspects of SBSTA’s business operations. Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy is a community dedicated to providing passionate skiers the opportunity to pursue athletic dreams, academic excellence and personal growth while celebrating grit, grace and courage. Sugar Bowl Academy is an independent day and boarding school for competitive skiers in grades 8-12, serving 80 full-time students. Sugar Bowl Ski Team is a development program for 425 young skiers, ages 4-16. SBSTA is situated at Sugar Bowl Resort on the top of Donner Summit in the Lake Tahoe area, with an average annual snowfall of 450 inches. Candidates should be adaptable to a changing environment and excited to work in an alpine setting.
The DFO is responsible for the supervision, coordination and administration of all aspects of SBSTA’s finance operation, including strategic finance, accounting and audit, legal entity and tax status, operations and facilities, risk management and insurance, transportation, and human resources. As a member of the Leadership Team and reporting to the Executive Director, the DFO works closely with faculty, staff, members of the administrative team, as well as the Finance and Audit committees of the Board of Trustees.
SBSTA is a high touch, customer-focused organization. As such, the successful candidate will need to skillfully deal with participants and stakeholders representing a wide spectrum of ages and interests. The DFO will be a strong team player who is equally comfortable in a strategic capacity, management role and/or hands on individual contributor. Initiative, perseverance and creativity coupled with a results oriented can-do attitude are a must.
In conjunction with the Executive Director and Head of School, prepare annual budgets and financial forecasts including recommendations for annual tuition/fees increases, financial aid, and salary increases.
Maintain accurate financial records, prepare periodic financial statements, and report on financial affairs of SBSTA to the Leadership Team and Board of Trustees.
Establish and maintain appropriate procedures and controls for all financial systems.
Supervise all finance and business office activities involving payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, general ledger, purchasing, employee benefits, taxes, and other accounting systems.
Manage the financial aid application process and financial aid reporting for the organization
Prepare financial records for annual independent audit, coordinate audit, and address issues resulting from the audit.
Work in concert with SBSTA’s tax accountant in preparation of annual tax filings.
Establish and maintain standards of housekeeping, maintenance, and repairs.
Oversee facilities operations including buildings, utilities, transportation, food services, snow removal, permits, and any other special projects.
Oversee SBSTA’s Information Technology Systems including phones, Internet, computers, e-mail, and all applications and business systems.
Safety and Insurance
Manage institutional risk to ensure the safety of personnel, students, and athletes in their use of the facilities.
Implement appropriate safety policies and maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect property and cover the liability of SBSTA as well as SBSTA’s employees and directors.
Be aware and knowledgeable of changes in state and federal regulations affecting independent schools or non-profits.
Supervise and manage human resource functions including writing, implementing, and maintaining appropriate personnel policies.
Oversee payroll and benefits programs including health insurance, retirement programs, and Workers’ Compensation. Ensure all programs are in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
Ensure that SBSTA’s personnel policies support its programs and that the organization’s actions regarding hiring, compensation, training, promotion, and separation conform with state and federal requirements.
Employment could also include participation in additional duties such as ExEd, Faculty on Duty, Staff and Student Orientation, Point Person, Senior Project Mentoring and Fundraising and Events.
The Director of Finance and Operations is a member of the SBSTA administrative team. In this capacity, he/she will be expected to cultivate and maintain constructive and collaborative working relationships throughout the organization and in particular with the leadership team.
Education, Skills and Qualifications:
5+ years successful track record in finance and operations
3 to 5 years of management experience culminating in leadership responsibilities
BA/BS degree, preferably in Business or Finance
CPA or CMA - nice to have
Proficient with Quickbooks or other accounting software.
Proficient with technology platforms, including G-Suite, MS Office applications, CRM and HR systems
Experience with non profit, academic or sports institutions preferred
General understanding of IT issues relative to small business venture
Excellent people, written and verbal skills
