Temporary, Part-time, 20-25 hours per week, May through August/September 2018
Sandy Spring Friends School seeks an energetic, committed individual to assist with our on-site Community Farm which exists to teach sustainable methods of food production. The farm is composed of two plots; an acre of diversified organic vegetables, culinary herbs, and flowers; and an eleven-acre plot used for row crops, permaculture development and planned grazing. Indian Runner ducks are kept for eggs, soil fertility, and pest control. Farm products are used in the school cafeteria, and a variety of school programs often use the space as an outdoor classroom. This position does not include health benefits, is non-exempt (hourly) paying $11.50 per hour.
Temporary, on-campus housing for one is included along with meals when the school cafeteria is open.
Must have clean driving record and be insurable by the school.
Must be proficient with basic farm tools and the ability to safely operate a tractor is a plus.
Assist farm manager in implementing soil fertility and crop plans.
Preparing raised beds, cultivation of fall crops, harvesting, cleaning and transporting crops to the cafeteria, seeding cover crops, mulching, spreading compost, etc.
Work with students in a variety of educational programs.
Physical Requirements: This is physically demanding outdoor summer position requiring the ability to perform farming tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds, reaching, squatting, and kneeling for a significant portion of the day in the intense summer heat.
