Darrow School seeks an English Teacher who demonstrates enthusiasm and creativity in teaching writing and literary analysis at all levels of high school. The English curriculum emphasizes a student-centered, process oriented approach, using a wide variety of source materials while focusing on written communication, critical thinking, and active curriculum. This person will teach four to fives courses, and collaborate with colleagues in choosing materials and designing curricula. Candidates should have a proven track record of actively collaborating with teens to solve problems. Our college-preparatory curriculum engages students in all types of subject matter through discussion inside the classroom, and direct experience outside the classroom, where they conduct experiments, perform project-based assignments, and use the Darrow environment as a living laboratory. Supported by our expert faculty, Darrow students actively participate in their own education.
The candidate should have at minimum a Bachelor’s degree in English or another closely related field of study, advanced degree encouraged (state certification not required), as well as expertise in teaching writing skills and a passion for teaching focused on the student and their development of investigative, analytical, collaborative and writing processes. Must have appreciation for the social-emotional aspects of school life, and a proven track record of building supportive social-emotional connections with colleagues and students as will also serve as House Parent and Advisor.
Being part of the faculty at a boarding school is different from teaching anywhere else. It is a way of life more than it is a job. The academic program includes traditional core curriculum as well as a large variety of elective courses. In addition to creating learning environments in the classroom, other responsibilities include spending time with students in the dorms, coaching and/or leading extra-curricular activities, advising and weekend responsibilities.
