Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC and Bethesda, MD, seeks an innovative, collaborative, and highly seasoned professional to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer. The CFO works closely with the Board of Trustees, especially the Audit, Finance, Infrastructure & Security, Investment, and Real Estate committees and their chairpersons. The CFO also has oversight of the Physical Plant, Security, Information Technology, Human Resources, Auxiliary Programs, and Finance departments. The CFO serves as a member of the Administrative Council, the School’s senior policymaking team, and reports directly to the Head of School.
The CFO bears primary responsibility for the management and integrity of the School’s fiscal policies, programs, and practices including preparation of the annual budget and the development of a sustainable, multi-year financial model capable of ensuring the fiscal stability of the institution. The School maintains an annual operating budget in excess of $55M and an endowment of $52M. Additionally, the CFO will be responsible for helping to coordinate the physical relocation of the Lower School campus (currently in Bethesda, MD) to the Middle/Upper School campus in Northwest Washington, DC. He/she will provide key oversight and leadership of several major construction projects currently in the planning and fundraising stages.
The successful candidate will be a creative and strategic thinker with a clear vision of the role of finance in realizing institutional objectives and priorities and should have substantial experience with complex real estate transactions. An outstanding communicator and problem solver, he/she will also have proven experience in managing change while demonstrating a dedication to community, collaboration, and equity.
A master’s degree, along with a minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible senior management experience in a complex, preferably academic, environment, is required. An MBA and/or CPA are also preferred. An understanding of the beliefs and tenets of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is also highly desirable.
